Product Details
CAS No.: 6385-62-2
Molecular Formula: C12H14Br2N2O
Relative Molecular Mass: 362.06
Toxicity: Moderately Toxic
Main Formulations: 150 g/L, 200 g/L Diquat Aqueous Solution; 20% Diquat Aqueous Solution
Physicochemical Properties
The pure product appears as colorless to pale yellow crystals. Its vapor pressure is <0.01 MPa, and its density is 1.61 g/cm³. Its solubility in water (at 20°C) is 700 g/L; it is slightly soluble in ethanol and carbonyl solvents, but insoluble in non-polar organic solvents. It remains stable in acidic and neutral solutions but is unstable under alkaline conditions.
Functional Characteristics
Diquat is a bipyridyl-class, non-selective desiccant for crops. Once absorbed by green plants, it inhibits electron transport during photosynthesis, generating oxygen free radicals that damage chloroplast membranes, cause chlorophyll degradation, and ultimately lead to leaf desiccation. In the context of plant growth regulation, it serves effectively as both a desiccant and a drying agent.
Application Techniques
Rice
5 to 7 days prior to harvest, apply 30 to 40 g of Diquat per *mu* (approx. 0.067 hectares) via foliar spray after diluting with water. Typically, the spray volume used is 25 to 50 kg per *mu*. This treatment promotes leaf desiccation and seed drying, facilitating manual or mechanical harvesting and reducing the need for subsequent drying processes such as sun-drying.
Potatoes
10 to 15 days prior to harvest, apply 40 to 50 g of Diquat per *mu* via foliar spray after diluting with water. This treatment causes the foliage to desiccate, thereby facilitating the harvesting process. **Rapeseed**
During the pod-filling to yellow-ripe stage (approximately 7 days prior to harvest), a foliar spray of 25 g of Diquat per *mu* (diluted with water) can reduce the moisture content of rapeseed pods and seeds by 52.66% and 24.84%, respectively. This treatment has no significant adverse effects on the germination rate, thousand-grain weight, or overall quality of the rapeseed. Furthermore, the Diquat residue level in seeds stored for 14 days was measured at 0.13 mg/kg—well within the safety standards established by both China and the United Kingdom; no Diquat residues were detected in seeds stored for 21 days.
Flax
When 80% of the flax capsules have turned yellowish-brown, a whole-plant spray of 40 g of Diquat per *mu* (diluted with water) can reduce the moisture content of the plants and seeds by 48.36% and 39.13%, respectively. Additionally, while the Diquat application has no significant impact on the thousand-grain weight or germination rate of the flax seeds, it significantly increases both the oil content and the alpha-linolenic acid content. Conversely, it significantly reduces the levels of oleic acid and stearic acid, thereby enhancing the overall quality of the flax crop.
Precautions
① To ensure efficacy, the spray solution must be applied evenly and thoroughly to the foliage.
② The spray solution causes no adverse effects if it contacts mature stems or bark; furthermore, it becomes immediately inactivated upon contact with the soil, posing no threat to the crop's root system.
③ When utilized for desiccation and drying purposes, the product should be applied no more than once per growing season, with a safety interval (pre-harvest interval) of 5 to 10 days.
