Product Details
Common English Name: Hemin
Trade Names: Iron porphyrin, hematin chloride
Chemical Name: 1,3,5,8-Tetramethyl-2,4-divinylporphine-6,7-dipropionic acid iron(III) chloride
CAS Number: 16009-13-5
Molecular Formula: C34H32ClFeN4O4
Relative Molecular Mass: 651.94
Toxicity: Slightly toxic
Main Dosage Form: 0.3% Hemin WP
Physicochemical Properties
Hemin appears as crystals or powder; it is dark brown in transmitted light and steel-blue in reflected light. It is odorless and tasteless, with a melting point >350°C and a relative density of 1.383 [(20±1)°C]. It is insoluble in water and acetic acid, sparingly soluble in 70%–80% ethanol, and soluble in dilute sodium hydroxide solution (forming hydroxyferriheme). It dissolves in strong organic acids (such as trimethylamine and xylidine) and acetic acid; it dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with the loss of iron and is readily soluble in dilute aqueous ammonia. It is sensitive to ultraviolet light but stable to heat.
Functional Characteristics
Hemin is a novel plant growth regulator; it is a derivative of the substrate hemin (catalyzed by heme oxygenase). Treating plants, plant tissues, or seeds with hemin—via methods such as drip irrigation, spraying, or soaking—can promote plant growth and morphogenesis, accelerate seed germination, enhance antioxidant capacity, and increase plant stress resistance.
