What Causes Deformed Pepper Fruits and How Can They Be Prevented?
There are many possible causes of deformed pepper fruits. Improper management of temperature, fertilizer and water can result in abnormal flower development and poor pollination, which may eventually lead to fruit deformation.
1. Poor Fertilization and Pollination
Pepper pollen requires a suitable temperature for germination, generally around 20–30°C.
Temperatures that are too high or too low can interfere with pollination and may contribute to the development of deformed fruits. Therefore, temperature should be properly controlled.
2. Insufficient Light, Fertilizer or Water
Poor light conditions or insufficient fertilizer and water can affect the water uptake of pepper roots and may contribute to the formation of deformed fruits.
Attention should also be paid to viral diseases, which can also cause deformed pepper fruits.
3. Nutritional Imbalance
Nutritional deficiencies, calcium deficiency in the soil, and excessive fertilizer application can also contribute to deformed fruit development.
How to Prevent Deformed Pepper Fruits
1. Maintain Suitable Greenhouse Temperatures
During winter and early spring, particular attention should be paid to maintaining suitable temperatures inside the greenhouse.
The temperature can be maintained at approximately 22–30°C during the day and 18–20°C at night.
2. Maintain Proper Fertilizer, Water and Light Management
Fertilizer and water should be supplied in a timely manner. Foliar fertilizers can be applied regularly to supplement nutrients and support healthy plant growth, thereby reducing the development of deformed fruits.
Balanced fertilization is also important. Nitrogen application should be appropriately reduced, while potassium fertilizer can be increased during the early growth stage.
On sunny days, greenhouse covers should be opened early and closed later to provide sufficient light exposure. Dust on the surface of greenhouse film should also be removed in a timely manner to maintain good light transmission.
La Banchang No. 2 imported nutrients or other amino acid foliar fertilizers can be applied to improve plant stress resistance and support normal fruit growth and development.
3. Increase Organic and Biological Fertilizer
Applying organic fertilizer and biological fertilizer can promote root development.
Improving soil conditions can support root growth and help reduce the initial level of soil-borne diseases.
4. Prune Properly
Proper pruning and removal of excessive branches and leaves can help maintain good air circulation and light penetration and support healthy plant growth.
