Paclobutrazol technical grade is a triazole plant growth regulator. Its primary mode of action involves inhibiting plant growth by suppressing the biosynthesis of endogenous gibberellins, thereby effectively regulating and controlling plant growth and development.
What are the effects of paclobutrazol on plants?
- Paclobutrazol can alter the balance of endogenous hormones in plants, inhibiting the synthesis of gibberellic acid and promoting the formation of abscisic acid, thereby inhibiting plant growth and controlling excessive growth, which is beneficial for flower and fruit retention.
- Paclobutrazol can increase the content of chlorophyll and protein. Plants treated with paclobutrazol have dark green, thick leaves and excellent appearance. Therefore, in some vegetable growing areas, low concentrations of paclobutrazol are sprayed about 20 days before harvest to improve quality.
- Paclobutrazol promotes lateral bud growth and tillering. Paclobutrazol can inhibit apical dominance, preventing upward growth and indirectly promoting lateral bud growth. For example, spraying paclobutrazol before wheat tillering is beneficial for tillering.
- Paclobutrazol can improve plant resistance to adverse conditions. By using paclobutrazol, the stomatal opening and closing degree of plant leaves can be reduced, thus reducing water consumption and improving drought resistance; it also has a certain bactericidal effect, thus preventing disease.
Paclobutrazol Application Techniques:
In field crop areas, paclobutrazol is mainly used to control excessive growth, and its application requires careful consideration. For peanuts, when the plants reach 40 cm in height, it is recommended to use 40-50 g/mu of 15% paclobutrazol wettable powder. For rice seedlings, it is recommended to use 15% paclobutrazol at a dilution of 500-750 times. For rapeseed seedbeds, it is recommended to use 15% paclobutrazol at a dilution of 750-1500 times. For winter wheat, it is recommended to use 30-40 g/mu of 15% paclobutrazol.
In fruit tree areas, paclobutrazol is mainly used to control shoot growth, promote flower bud differentiation, and increase the number of flowers. This application requires a higher level of technical expertise, and growers should ideally have guidance from agricultural technicians.
In fruit tree areas, there are generally two methods for controlling shoot growth with paclobutrazol: foliar spraying and soil application. For controlling shoot growth, spray with a 15% paclobutrazol solution diluted 250-500 times, about 10 days before the summer (or autumn) shoots emerge. The dosage is mainly determined based on the growth vigor of the fruit trees. Soil application is generally done in spring or autumn; the specific dosage depends on the plant's growth, soil type, and tree age. Expert guidance is essential for this application!
Paclobutrazol usage precautions
- Paclobutrazol not only inhibits apical dominance but also significantly affects root growth. Therefore, when controlling peanut growth, the impact on pegging must be considered!
- Paclobutrazol has a long residual period in the soil, at least six months. Therefore, the impact on the next crop must be considered. If the next crop is vegetables, it is recommended to reduce or eliminate the use of paclobutrazol!
- Continuous large-scale use of paclobutrazol is not recommended, mainly due to its residual period. We can use some compound formulations, such as brassinolide + paclobutrazol, or paclobutrazol + mepiquat chloride, which offer better safety and less impact on the next crop! Paclobutrazol is very effective at controlling excessive growth, but it can easily cause phytotoxicity if not used carefully, leading to stunted plant growth, especially in vegetables and fruit trees. It is strongly recommended that you consult with the manufacturer for guidance and avoid using it blindly; otherwise, it may affect the yield and quality of your crops!
