Cowpea Yield Boost & Quality Optimization
Plant Growth Regulator Application for Cowpea Yield Boost & Quality Optimization
Triacontanol
Treating cowpeas with triacontanol can significantly increase the pod-setting rate. This is particularly beneficial during the spring season, when low temperatures often hinder pod formation; under such conditions, triacontanol treatment effectively boosts the pod-setting rate, thereby facilitating early high yields and increasing economic returns. By applying a foliar spray of 0.5 mg/L triacontanol once during the initial flowering stage and again during the early pod-setting stage, cowpea yields can be increased by 12%.
Diethyl Aminoethyl Hexanoate (DA-6)
DA-6 enhances photosynthesis in cowpeas, increases chlorophyll content, boosts the plant's absorption of CO2, and regulates the plant's carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. Furthermore, it improves the disease resistance of both the leaves and the entire plant, resulting in vigorous growth. During the growing season, applying a foliar spray of 10–12 mg/L DA-6 at 15-day intervals—for a total of 2 to 3 applications—can increase yields by over 20%.
DCPTA
Applying a uniform foliar spray of 30–40 mg/L DCPTA solution to the entire plant—specifically after the cowpea has developed four true leaves, during the initial flowering stage, and during the pod-setting stage—not only substantially increases bean yields but also improves quality by boosting protein and fat content.
6-BA
Applying a foliar spray of 20 mg/L 6-BA solution during the bud-formation stage of the cowpea plant effectively increases the levels of free proline, soluble sugars, and chlorophyll in the leaves, while simultaneously reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) content, thereby achieving the desired yield-increasing effect.
Brassinolide
Applying a foliar spray of 0.067 mg/L brassinolide to cowpeas during the cotyledon stage—with applications repeated every 5 days—results in significant improvements compared to untreated controls. Specifically, the stem diameter, fresh weight, dry weight, and seedling vigor index of the cowpeas increased by 10.57%, 36.61%, 32.02%, and 40.00%, respectively. Concurrently, the brassinolide treatment significantly reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline levels in cowpea leaves by 58.57% and 48.91%, respectively.
Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA)
Spraying a 5–15 mg/L solution of naphthalene acetic acid during the flowering stage of cowpeas—focusing the spray specifically on the flowers—helps reduce flower and pod drop. Furthermore, it significantly influences the crop's Vitamin C, crude fiber, and crude protein content, while also promoting earlier maturation.
4-Chlorophenoxyacetic Acid (4-CPA)
Spraying a 6–12 mg/L solution of 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid during the flowering stage of cowpeas helps reduce flower and pod drop. It significantly influences the crop's Vitamin C, crude fiber, and reducing sugar content, while also promoting earlier maturation.
