Silver Thiosulfate
Tropical orchid cut flowers are highly sensitive to ethylene; they are typically pre-treated with ethylene antagonists—such as silver nitrate or silver thiosulfate—prior to storage, transport, or placement in a vase. For instance, treating *Cymbidium* cut flowers with a 33 mg/L silver thiosulfate solution for 8–12 hours can extend their vase life. *Phalaenopsis* orchids are extremely sensitive to ethylene; spraying them with 800 mg/L silver thiosulfate before flowering helps preserve freshness, and the recommended temperature for storage and transport is 18°C.
Cut Orchid Vase Life & Preservation
Appropriate pre-treatment helps extend the vase life of *Phalaenopsis* cut flowers. Pre-treatment solutions may consist of 200 mg/L 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate combined with 20 g/L sucrose, or a 10-minute soak in 100 mg/L silver nitrate solution, to prevent stem rot and the clogging of xylem vessels caused by microbial proliferation. A 30-minute pre-treatment with silver thiosulfate can also extend the vase life of the flowers.
