Corn Tillering Period Yield Increase Record

Aug 21,2025

I. Analysis of the Causes of Tillering

Varietal Differences

Varieties with weak apical dominance (such as the Xianyu series) are prone to tillering, while varieties like the Dongdan series and Zhengdan 958 have low tillering rates.

Densely planted varieties (such as Huangjinliang MY73) reduce tillering rates by 60% compared to traditional varieties through vertical root system design.

Environmental Factors

Early planting under low temperatures activates tillering nodes, and excessive water and fertilizer (such as excessive urea application) can double the number of tillers.

Herbicide damage or rainfall following high temperatures and drought may trigger tillering as a “backup plant” mechanism.

II. Yield-Enhancing Management Measures

Field Operations

Tillage timing: Manually remove tillers before the large whorl stage to avoid nutrient competition (except for forage corn).

Chemical growth regulation: Apply 30 ml/acre of corn growth regulator (at the large whorl stage) to shorten internodes and enhance lodging resistance.

Water and Fertilizer Management

Apply 15 kg/mu of urea during the jointing stage (band application is preferable), combined with two critical irrigations: during the large whorl stage and around tasseling.

A case study in Tongyu, Jilin Province, showed that spraying 0.3% urea + 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate on fields with damaged main stems can promote root recovery.

III. Empirical Data Comparison

Sodium Nitrophenolate

At the 7-9 leaf stage, from the big bell mouth stage to before tasseling, spraying 30 mg/L sodium nitrophenolate solution once respectively can increase the plant height by 2 cm, decrease the ear height by 3 cm, and increase the rhizome diameter by 0. .12 cm, the stem diameter at the ear position increased by 0.27 cm, and the yield was increased by 3.72%, and the effect was significant.

Diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate

At the 6-leaf stage of maize, 53 mg/L of diethyl aminoethyl was sprayed. Under different planting densities, the elastic modulus of corn stalks of "Qingnong 11" and "Zhengdan 958" sprayed with diethyl aminoethyl Both were significantly improved, while at low density, the bending strength of the two varieties was not significant, and at high density, the bending resistance was significantly improved, and the rigidity of the stem was improved. And it can promote growth and development. The yield of "Qingnong 11" is increased by 10.3%~15.1%, and the yield of "Zhengdan 958" is increased by 9.9%~11.4%.

What are the types of herbicides?

It refers to the herbicides that have selectivity among different plants, which can poison or kill weeds without harming crops, or even only poison a certain kind of weeds without harming crops and other weeds. For example, grass grams, take puff net, dimethyl tetrachloro sodium salt, enemy barnyard, benadryl and so on.
