Glyphosine 85%SP

Glyphosine belongs to a class of agents that stimulate plants to produce ethylene. It exerts a significant effect on the maturation of sugarcane and sugar beets, as well as on increasing their sugar content. Within sugarcane, it inhibits the conversion of sucrose by acid invertase, thereby promoting sucrose accumulation and increasing yield. At high concentrations, it exhibits herbicidal properties and is utilized as a defoliant for cotton.

Physicochemical Properties

This product is a white solid with low volatility. Its solubility in water at 20°C is 24.8%; it is slightly soluble in ethanol and insoluble in benzene. Store under cool and dry conditions.

Functional Characteristics

Glyphosine inhibits the growth of plant apical buds while promoting the growth of lateral buds. It is primarily used on sugarcane and watermelons as a sugar-enhancing and ripening agent; it reduces the activity of acid invertase within the plant, thereby preventing the conversion of sucrose into starch and increasing sugar content. At high concentrations, it can inhibit plant growth, causing leaves to chlorose (lose green color), dehydrate, and wither, or even kill the plant; thus, it can also be utilized as a preservative or herbicide.

Application Techniques

Increasing Sugar Content

Sugarcane
28 to 56 days before harvest, a 0.3%–0.5% glyphosate solution can be applied via foliar spray to inhibit vegetative growth and increase the sugar content of the sugarcane, resulting in an average yield increase of 10%.
Sugar Beet
During the late stage of sugar beet development, spraying with a 0.2%–0.3% glyphosate solution inhibits the vegetative growth of the plant's above-ground parts. This increases the sugar content (Brix) by 0.6°–2.5° and boosts sugar yield by 12.1%–17.7%, demonstrating a significant effect on increasing sugar production.
Tomato
Spraying the entire plant with a 500 mg/L glyphosate solution during the full-bloom stage inhibits the vegetative growth of the tomato plant. This may even cause significant phytotoxicity, characterized by leaf yellowing and the appearance of scorch spots, followed by gradual wilting. On the other hand, glyphosate regulates invertase activity, leading to a 7.3% increase in reducing sugar content. **Watermelon:** Applying a foliar spray of 500–800 mg/L of Zengganlin solution twice—at 14 and 21 days after the onset of flowering—can increase the sugar content by 19% to 28%.
Melon
The effect of Zengganlin on the sugar content of thick-skinned melon fruits is dependent on the timing of application. Spraying Zengganlin immediately after the peak flowering period of female flowers—once young fruits have firmly set—does not enhance the sugar content of thick-skinned melons; on the contrary, it reduces the sugar levels within the fruit. This adverse effect is likely due to early application inhibiting the plant's vegetative growth and causing a certain degree of phytotoxicity. However, applying a 200 mg/L Zengganlin solution 30 days after flowering has a positive effect on increasing both the total sugar and sucrose content in thick-skinned melons.

Improving Storability

Apple
Applying a foliar spray of Zengganlin approximately 14 days prior to harvest—at a concentration of 500 mg/L for "Guoguang" apples and 1000 mg/L for "Red Star" apples—can significantly reduce ethylene production and respiration rates in both varieties. This treatment helps maintain higher fruit firmness during storage, delays the fruit's senescence process, and simultaneously reduces the incidence of "tiger-skin disease" (a physiological disorder).
Pear
Applying a foliar spray of 500 mg/L Zengganlin solution approximately 14 days prior to harvest not only increases the fruit's sugar content but also effectively controls "black heart disease" (internal breakdown) in "Ya" pears during the later stages of storage.
Cucumber & Snap Bean
Post-harvest, soaking the produce in a 0.1% aqueous solution of Zengganlin for 10 minutes—followed by draining—before storing in a cellar at ambient temperature can reduce water loss and improve the commercial marketability rate.

Precautions

① Plants exhibit significant variations in their response to Zengganlin depending on the specific stage of application; therefore, the product must be used strictly in accordance with the prescribed application timing.
② The treatment remains effective even if rain occurs 4 hours after application. Zengganlin should be applied exclusively as a foliar spray; it must not be applied directly to the soil via irrigation, as it is easily degraded by soil microorganisms. ③ The crops to be treated must have adequate water and nutrients and be growing vigorously; weak or stunted plants should not be treated.
