Common English Names: Maleic hydrazide, MH, MH-30, KMH
CAS No.: 123-33-1
Molecular Formula: C4H4N2O2
Relative Molecular Mass: 112.09
Toxicity: Low toxicity
Main Formulations: 90% Maleic Hydrazide Technical Grade, 30% & 36% Maleic Hydrazide Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC), 40% Maleic Hydrazide Wettable Powder (WP), 30% Maleic Hydrazide Ethanolamine Salt Solution, 25% Maleic Hydrazide Sodium Salt Aqueous Solution

Physicochemical Properties

The pure product is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 296–298°C. It is chemically stable; however, it decomposes to release nitrogen in the presence of strong acids and exhibits slight corrosiveness toward iron-based materials. Its potassium salt is water-soluble and decomposes upon exposure to light; strong acids and strong oxidizing agents accelerate this decomposition. It remains stable during storage at ambient temperatures. It is slightly soluble in water and most organic solvents, sparingly soluble in alcohols, but readily soluble in glacial acetic acid or triethanolamine.

Functions and Features

Maleic hydrazide is absorbed by plants through either their foliage or root systems and is subsequently translocated throughout the plant body via the xylem and phloem. It inhibits plant growth by arresting cell division. Depending on the specific dosage and the growth stage of the crop, it serves to suppress apical dominance, curb excessive terminal growth, and inhibit the sprouting and development of axillary buds, lateral buds, tubers, and fleshy roots.
Application Techniques

Tobacco
In tobacco fields where plants exhibit normal nutritional status and robust development, apply the treatment during the period ranging from the onset of budding (button stage) to the point where 10% of the central flowers have opened. Select a sunny day to perform a single, comprehensive topping operation, leaving 18 to 20 effective leaves per plant. Simultaneously, remove any axillary buds that have grown longer than 2 cm. On the very day of topping, apply a maleic hydrazide solution (at a concentration of 6040–7550 mg/L) using a cup-drench method; direct the solution specifically to the axillary buds located on both sides of the leaf petioles at the top of the plant. The application volume should be 20–25 mL per tobacco plant.

Jujube
Following the second pinching (tip removal), apply a foliar spray of a 500 mg/L solution twice, at 14-day intervals. This inhibits the vigorous growth of new shoots, reduces the internode length of "jujube heads" (main branches) and secondary branches while increasing their girth, and results in a more compact plant architecture. Furthermore, it enhances the fruit-bearing capacity of the secondary branches and strengthens the jujube tree's resilience against natural disasters.
Atractylodes
During the bud formation stage of *Atractylodes* plants, applying a foliar spray of a 4800–6000 mg/L solution of Maleic Hydrazide (a bud suppressant) effectively inhibits the opening of flower buds. This completely eliminates the need for manual bud removal, thereby achieving the objectives of saving labor, increasing yield, and improving economic efficiency.
Onion
Spray onions with a 500 mg/L solution of Maleic Hydrazide 14 days before harvest to inhibit sprouting and significantly extend their storage life.
Garlic
When the garlic bulbs reach a diameter of 3–5 cm—specifically when the outer leaves have withered, but the central leaves remain green—apply a foliar spray of a 2500 mg/L solution of Maleic Hydrazide. This treatment can extend the storage period by approximately six months.
Radish, Carrot, and Cabbage
Apply a foliar spray of a 2000–5000 mg/L solution of Maleic Hydrazide to the leaves 4 to 14 days prior to harvest to extend the storage life of these crops.

Precautions

① When using Maleic Hydrazide on tobacco crops to control axillary bud growth, application techniques must be strictly adhered to. The product may be applied only *once* during the entire growing season. Application should be avoided immediately before rainfall, during periods of heavy dew, or when ambient temperatures exceed 37°C or drop below -10°C. The optimal time for application is at midday on a sunny, windless day with no anticipated rainfall; if rain occurs within six hours of application, the spray treatment must be repeated.
② Due to concerns regarding toxicity and residual levels, national regulations prohibit the use of Maleic Hydrazide on crops intended for direct human consumption.
③ The efficacy of Maleic Hydrazide can vary significantly depending on the specific formulation used.
