Common English Name: Chitosan
Chemical Name: β-(1→4)-2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose
CAS Number: 9012-76-4
Molecular Formula: (C6H11NO4)n
Relative Molecular Mass: (161.1)n
Physicochemical Properties
The pure product is a white or off-white amorphous flake or powder; it is odorless and tasteless. It is insoluble in water but dissolves in organic acids (such as lactic acid and acetic acid) and dilute inorganic acids (such as hydrochloric acid and nitric acid) to form a viscous liquid. It is chemically stable and heat-resistant, undergoing no denaturation during high-temperature sterilization.
Toxicity: Slightly toxic
Main Dosage Forms: 0.5% and 2% chitosan aqueous solutions, 0.5% chitosan suspension seed coating agents, 0.5% chitosan wettable powders
Functional Characteristics
The free amino groups in chitosan molecules exhibit a strong affinity for various proteins; consequently, chitosan serves as a carrier for physiologically active substances—such as enzymes, antigens, and antibodies—helping to maintain high levels of enzymatic and cellular activity. Additionally, chitosan possesses a unique regulatory function regarding plant nitrogen metabolism; it effectively promotes the growth of roots, stems, and leaves, improves crop quality, and enhances plant resistance. Chitosan can form chelates with metal ions and adsorb onto negatively charged organic substances (such as proteins, amino acids, and nucleic acids), thereby improving soil aggregate structure. Furthermore, chitosan exhibits bacteriostatic properties. This is primarily due to the positively charged amino groups on the chitosan molecular chain; since bacterial cells typically carry a negative charge, chitosan adsorbs onto the bacterial cell wall surface via these amino groups. It forms a polymer film that alters cell membrane permeability, blocks nutrient uptake, and induces plasmolysis, thereby killing the bacteria. Alternatively, chitosan can penetrate the bacterial cell, bind with the negatively charged intracellular cytoplasm, and cause flocculation, leading to bacterial death. In practical applications, chitosan can simultaneously serve as a plant growth regulator, soil conditioner, and preservative to regulate crop growth.
