Product Details
English common name: Phethalanilic acid
Chemical name: N-phenylphthalamic acid
CAS No.: 4727-29-1
Molecular formula: C14H11NO3
Relative molecular mass: 241.24
Physicochemical properties
Pure phethalanilic acid appears as white needle-like crystals. It has a melting point of (168 ± 1)°C and a decomposition temperature of 169°C. It is sparingly soluble in water, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride, but soluble in organic solvents such as anhydrous methanol, ethanol, and acetone. At 25°C, its solubility is 1.98 g/L in water, 16.80 g/L in anhydrous methanol, and 7.57 g/L in acetone. It is stable under normal storage conditions and exhibits good thermal storage stability.
Toxicity: Low toxicity
Main formulations: 95% phethalanilic acid technical concentrate, 20% phethalanilic acid soluble concentrate, 20% phethalanilic acid aqueous solution, 20% phethalanilic acid wettable powder
Functional characteristics
Phethalanilic acid is a biologically active plant growth regulator. When applied via foliar spray, it rapidly penetrates the plant, promoting the transport of nutrients to the growth points of flower buds. It enhances plant cell vitality, promotes chlorophyll synthesis, and facilitates fertilization and pollination, thereby inducing flower buds to set fruit. It prevents physiological fruit drop and pre-harvest fruit drop, and can advance the natural maturity date by 5 to 7 days. It has significant flower and fruit retention effects and can increase yields for crops with low fruit-setting rates.
Agricultural Applications of Phethalanilic Acid
Soybeans
Foliar spraying with Panpan Industry’s phethalanilic acid (500–740 mg/L) once during the peak flowering stage and once during the pod-setting stage promotes growth and development, prevents flower and pod drop, encourages full bean development, increases the 100-grain weight, and accelerates maturity.
Chili Peppers
Spraying three times with Panpan Industry’s phethalanilic acid solution (200 mg/L)—during the seedling, budding, and early flowering stages—enhances stress resistance and results in increased yields.
Jujubes (Chinese Dates)
Spraying 1–2 times with phethalanilic acid solution (150–200 mg/L) during the peak flowering and young fruit stages promotes fruit set, regulates fruit stalk morphology (making them shorter and thicker), reduces physiological fruit drop, and effectively enlarges the fruit by increasing cell numbers.
Apples
Spraying with Panpan Industry’s phethalanilic acid solution (166.7 mg/L) when the central flower buds show pink (the "pink bud" stage) helps prevent frost damage, promotes flowering and fruit retention, and guards against moldy core disease. Spraying with 200 mg/L phethalanilic acid combined with fungicides such as mancozeb or propineb after petal fall or before bagging improves fruit set, prevents diseases like blotch and brown spot, and helps accumulate nutrients for fruit growth. Spraying with 250 mg/L phethalanilic acid after bagging facilitates nutrient accumulation and reduces fruit drop during the late growth stage.
Precautions
① Ensure appropriate fertilization and irrigation practices; use with caution on poor-quality soil or in drought-prone areas.
② Due to the increased volume of flowers and fruit, ensure adequate follow-up nutrient fertilization.
③ Avoid spraying under intense sunlight; if it rains within 3 hours of application, re-spray.
