Common English Name: 4-iodophenoxyacetic acid (4-IPA)
CAS Number: 1878-94-0
Molecular Formula: C8H7O3
Relative Molecular Mass: 278.04
Physicochemical Properties
The technical-grade product consists of white needle-like crystals that are odorless and tasteless, with a melting point of 154–156°C. Industrial-grade product appears as an orange-yellow powder with a slight, pungent iodine odor. It is sparingly soluble in cold water but readily soluble in hot water and organic solvents such as ethanol, chloroform, and benzene. It forms salts upon contact with alkalis and is chemically stable, allowing for long-term storage.
Toxicity: Low toxicity
Main Formulations: 95% 4-iodophenoxyacetic acid technical powder; 0.1% 4-iodophenoxyacetic acid emulsifiable concentrate (EC)

Functional Characteristics

4-Iodophenoxyacetic acid is a phenoxyacetic acid-type plant growth regulator with auxin-like activity. It promotes cell division and differentiation and inhibits the formation of abscission layers. It regulates the translocation of nutrients from vegetative organs to reproductive organs, promoting flowering and fruiting; it also facilitates the movement of assimilates to areas of vigorous growth, thereby increasing yield.

Precautions

① 4-Iodophenoxyacetic acid (or its sodium salt) can be applied via spraying, spot application, or seed soaking. When preparing the solution, first dissolve the technical product in alcohol or hot water to create a stock solution, then dilute with cold water to the specified concentration before use.
② Spraying during the flowering stage should be done in the afternoon to avoid spraying the solution directly onto the flower stamens/pistils, which could interfere with pollination. If rainfall occurs within 6 hours of spraying, a follow-up application is required.
③ If the seed soaking duration exceeds 12 hours, the concentration should be appropriately reduced.
