What Causes Pepper Seedling Death and How Can It Be Prevented?
Causes of Pepper Seedling Death
1. Continuous Cropping
Pepper is particularly sensitive to continuous cropping.
Repeatedly planting peppers on the same land can reduce soil organic matter and worsen soil aeration. It may also lead to the depletion of certain nutrients and increase the risk of soil-borne pests and diseases.
2. Improper Fertilization
Excessive nitrogen fertilizer, insufficient phosphorus, potassium or other micronutrients, and the use of incompletely decomposed organic manure can all negatively affect plant growth.
Excessive irrigation combined with improper fertilization may also cause root damage. These conditions can weaken plant resistance and aggravate disease, eventually leading to seedling death.

3. Improper Irrigation
Improper irrigation can create favorable conditions for disease development.
Fields that are over-irrigated may have a higher incidence of disease than fields managed with methods such as drip irrigation under plastic mulch.
4. Pathogen-Contaminated Seeds or Seedlings
Seeds and seedlings can be important means of long-distance pathogen transmission and may serve as initial sources of infection when establishing a new vegetable field.
Therefore, seeds and seedlings should be properly treated before sowing or transplanting.
5. Pathogen Infection
Pathogen infection is an important cause of pepper seedling death.
During the seedling and early post-transplanting stages, diseases such as damping-off, seedling blight and Phytophthora blight may occur. During the adult plant stage, Phytophthora blight can become a major concern.
6. Pest Damage
Among the pests that can cause pepper seedlings to die, root-knot nematodes are an important one.
They damage pepper roots and lateral roots and can contribute to secondary disease problems. Root-knot nematode infestation can also cause abnormal root enlargement and the formation of characteristic root galls.
7. Soil Disinfection Before Planting
Before planting, the use of the La Banchang Soil Disinfection Package for soil treatment can help address soil-related problems associated with pepper seedling death.
Prevention of Pepper Seedling Death
1. Practice Crop Rotation
Implement crop rotation according to local conditions to reduce the accumulation of soil-borne pathogens.
Where conditions permit, peppers can be rotated with crops such as onions, ginger, garlic, grain crops and cotton for three years or longer.
2. Use Properly Certified Seeds and Disinfect Them
Purchase seeds that have passed the required inspection and quarantine procedures and disinfect the seeds before sowing.
The original recommendation is to soak seeds in 1% copper sulfate solution for 5 minutes, then remove them and mix with plant ash before sowing.
3. Improve Nutrient Management
Apply appropriate amounts of organic fertilizer, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, and micronutrient fertilizers to support healthy plant growth and improve plant resistance.
4. Irrigate Properly
Avoid excessive irrigation and standing water.
Appropriate cultivation and soil loosening can also help improve soil aeration and root-zone conditions.
5. Protect Pepper Seedlings During the Early Growth Stage
During the pepper seedling stage, the Pepper Root Rot Prevention Package can be applied as part of disease management. According to the original product description, it is used for the prevention and treatment of diseases such as seedling blight, damping-off and root rot.
