How to Deal with Severe Flower, Leaf and Fruit Drop in Chili Peppers?

Sep 15,2026

Flower, fruit, and leaf drop during the fruiting period can significantly affect pepper yield. Many factors can cause what is commonly referred to as the “three drops” in pepper cultivation.

In general, early flower drop is mainly caused by low temperatures and soil drought, which can affect pollination. During the middle and later stages of growth, flower, leaf, and fruit drop may be associated with excessive or insufficient nitrogen fertilizer, which can lead to excessive vegetative growth or poor plant nutrition. Other contributing factors include excessive planting density, insufficient light, high temperatures, waterlogging, and pest and disease damage.

Therefore, attention should be paid to the following aspects when growing peppers.

1. Manage Fertilization and Water Carefully

Fertilization and irrigation should be properly controlled.

Before fruit set, irrigation and topdressing can be reduced or withheld according to field conditions to help control excessive vegetative growth and promote reproductive growth. When topdressing is required, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can be appropriately increased while nitrogen fertilizer is reduced.

After peppers enter the peak flowering and fruit-setting period, fruit enlargement becomes more rapid, so nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilization should be increased appropriately according to crop requirements.

2. Maintain Appropriate Temperature and Soil Moisture

Pepper plants require suitable air and soil moisture conditions. The recommended air humidity is 55%–65%, while soil moisture is around 15%.

When soil moisture exceeds 18%, excessive moisture may affect root development as well as plant growth. Water accumulation in the field should be avoided. During the peak fruiting period, however, the soil should be kept adequately moist.

3. Monitor Pests and Diseases

Common pepper diseases include anthracnose, viral diseases, and cottony leak, among others. Viral diseases can cause plant stunting and severely affect yield. Pests such as aphids and spider mites can also contribute to flower and fruit drop.
