When Is the Best Time to Top Pepper Plants for Higher Yields?
The timing of pepper topping should be determined mainly by plant height and planting date.
Each leaf axil of a pepper plant contains a growing point from which branches can develop. In other words, the more leaves retained when topping, the more branches the plant may produce, which can potentially result in more fruits.
However, retaining too many branches may delay fruit maturity.
For peppers planted relatively early, such as peppers intercropped with wheat or garlic, approximately 12–13 leaves can be retained. This allows the plant to develop around 12–13 branches.
For peppers planted later, around May 10, approximately 8–9 branches can be retained.
For peppers planted after May 20, approximately 6 branches can be retained.
Late-planted varieties should not be left with too many branches, as the fruits may not have enough time to mature.
On the other hand, retaining fewer branches means fewer fruits, but the available nutrients can be distributed among fewer fruits, which may help promote earlier maturity.
