Why Do Pepper Plants Die After Heavy Rain and How Can This Be Prevented?
Pepper plants may suddenly wilt and die after heavy rainfall. This is commonly associated with bacterial wilt. Two major factors are considered to contribute to the occurrence of bacterial wilt in peppers.
1. Soil Conditions
Bacterial wilt in peppers often occurs after heavy rainfall or irrigation.
After heavy rain or irrigation, soil conditions can change, particularly when excessive water causes changes in soil pH. According to the original source, bacterial wilt pathogens can multiply rapidly in acidic soil with a moisture content above 25%.
As a result, pepper roots may become infected, causing the leaves to wilt due to insufficient water supply and eventually leading to plant death.
2. Continuous Cropping
Continuous cropping of peppers and other fruiting vegetables in the same field can reduce soil potassium levels.
Solanaceous fruiting vegetables generally have relatively high potassium requirements. A lack of potassium may weaken the plant's resistance and make pepper plants more susceptible to bacterial wilt and other problems.
How to Manage Pepper Plants After Heavy Rain
1. Drain Excess Water and Loosen the Soil
When the soil moisture in a pepper field becomes too high, conditions may favor the multiplication of bacterial wilt pathogens.
Therefore, excess water should be drained as soon as possible. After heavy rainfall, standing water should preferably be removed from the field within 24 hours.
Yellow leaves should also be removed from affected plants.
During irrigation, avoid applying excessive amounts of water. Soil compaction can also occur after heavy rain or irrigation, so compacted areas should be loosened in a timely manner.
Improving soil aeration can support root respiration and nutrient uptake and may also help improve plant resistance.
2. Practice Crop Rotation
Avoid continuous cropping with peppers and other solanaceous vegetables.
A three-year crop rotation with grass-family crops is recommended in the original cultivation guidance.
Before planting peppers, soil can also be treated with a suitable fungicide according to product instructions.
3. Preventive Chemical Treatment
Before rainfall, the La Banchang Complete Disease Management Package + kasugamycin can be applied to the field according to the respective product instructions.
After heavy rainfall, once excess water has been drained, another application can be made.
According to the original recommendation, this treatment can help prevent and manage diseases such as bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt and Phytophthora blight, and reduce problems such as blackening of stems, root rot and plant death.
