Why Do Pepper Fruits Crack After Heavy Rain?
During the coloring and fruit enlargement stages, heavy rainfall can cause widespread fruit cracking.
The severity of cracking can vary. When pepper fruits are undergoing color change or a second stage of fruit enlargement, cracking tends to be more severe.
Fully mature fruits are less prone to cracking, while green fruits during the first fruit enlargement stage generally grow more synchronously and are less likely to crack.
When peppers are undergoing color change or secondary fruit enlargement, prolonged cloudy and rainy weather can cause the plants to absorb excessive amounts of water.
The resulting imbalance between pulp growth and fruit skin growth can lead to physiological fruit cracking.
Pepper fruit cracking is primarily a physiological problem, so it cannot generally be solved through pesticide application alone. Preventive management should therefore focus on proper water and fertilizer management before the problem occurs.
