When Is the Best Time to Promote Pepper Fruit Ripening?

After pepper fruits have developed, appropriate ripening management can be carried out to improve their appearance and market quality.
The usual timing for promoting fruit color development is approximately 10–15 days before harvest.
The original recommendation mentions applying 40% ethephon at 1,000-fold dilution as a foliar spray.
Ethephon is described as having two main effects:
- It can promote earlier leaf senescence, helping nutrients stored in the leaves move to the fruits.
- It can promote earlier fruit color development and ripening.
According to the original source, ethephon treatment may help peppers develop a brighter purple-red color and mature 7–10 days earlier, with a reported yield increase of up to approximately 70% under the described conditions.
However, ethephon treatment is generally not encouraged. If the concentration, temperature or application timing is not properly controlled, the treatment may produce the opposite effect and negatively affect the crop.
