Paclobutrazol
Foliar spraying with a 250–1000 mg/L paclobutrazol solution—applied once or twice before the onset of summer shoot growth or when new shoots are less than 3 cm long—can shorten summer shoots by 50%–70%, increase fruit set by 2%–4%, and boost yield by 6%–48%. Optimal concentrations and application frequencies vary by cultivar: 300 mg/L for Shatangju (Sugar Mandarin), 750 mg/L for Satsuma Mandarin (Wenzhou Mikan), 1000 mg/L for Ponkan, 500 mg/L for Bendizao, and a range of 250–750 mg/L for Liu-cheng (Sweet Orange).
Fosamine
When approximately 50% of summer shoots have emerged and reached a length of 1–1.5 cm, the tree canopy should be sprayed with a 750–1000 mg/L solution. This treatment reduced the number of summer shoots by 69 in Satsuma Mandarin and by 43.7 in 'Anliu' Sweet Orange; shoot lengths were reduced by 13.7 cm and 13.3 cm, respectively, compared to the control. Fosamine spraying also significantly improved fruit set rates. For Satsuma Mandarin, the 750 mg/L concentration yielded the greatest improvement (an 82.2% increase over the control), while for 'Anliu' Sweet Orange, the 1000 mg/L concentration was most effective (a 62.3% increase over the control).
Uniconazole
Spraying the entire plant with a 100–120 mg/L uniconazole solution during the summer shoot emergence period can inhibit shoot elongation in young citrus trees and promote fruit set.
Maleic Hydrazide (MH)
To delay bud break and prevent frost damage in early spring, spraying with 800–1000 mg/L Maleic Hydrazide in late September can delay spring bud break by 7 days in non-bearing young citrus trees; however, this treatment is not suitable for mature, fruit-bearing trees.
Flumetralin
Spraying with a 125–250 mg/L flumetralin solution—applied 2–3 times at 10-day intervals when new shoots are less than 7.5 cm long (during the spring shoot maturation and summer shoot emergence stages)—effectively inhibits excessive shoot growth and promotes fruit retention, fruit expansion, and increased yield.
