Citrus Flowering, Fruit Setting & Development
Application of Regulators for Citrus Flowering, Fruit Set, and Development
Sodium nitrophenolate atonik
Spraying a 2.3–2.8 mg/L solution once each at the onset of flowering, after fruit set, and during the fruit expansion stage enhances disease resistance, improves fruit set rates, promotes fruit enlargement, increases sugar and Vitamin C content, and boosts overall yield.
Diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate (DA-6)
Spraying an 8–15 mg/L solution once each at the onset of flowering, during the mid-stage of physiological fruit drop, and when the fruit diameter reaches 2–3 cm accelerates young fruit expansion, improves fruit set and disease resistance, and results in fruit with smooth, glossy skin and thin rinds; it also promotes sweetness, early ripening, and increased yield.
Brassinosteroids (BR)
Spraying a 0.02–0.04 mg/L brassinosteroid solution once each during the bud stage, young fruit stage, and fruit expansion stage significantly improves fruit set, promotes fruit enlargement and yield, and facilitates later-stage coloration.
Gibberellic acid (GA3)
Spraying a 25–50 mg/L gibberellic acid solution once, seven days after petal fall, and again between the first and second waves of physiological fruit drop, helps preserve flowers and fruit. (Note: ① It can be mixed with cytokinins to improve fruit retention during the first wave of physiological fruit drop. ② For Satsuma mandarins, the optimal timing for gibberellic acid application should be advanced to the period between late full bloom and petal fall. ③ Adding 0.2% urea, 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, and 0.2% borax to the gibberellic acid solution during spraying can enhance the flower and fruit retention effect. ④ If high temperatures and drought occur during the flowering and fruiting stages, gibberellic acid application should be combined with appropriate orchard irrigation to maximize flower and fruit retention.)
Zeatin
Uniformly spraying a 0.002–0.003 mg/L solution during the petal-fall stage and the late phase of the first physiological fruit drop significantly increases fruit set. Uniformly spraying a 0.0015 mg/L solution during the fruit coloring stage results in an orange-red appearance and high sugar content.
Triacontanol
Foliar spraying with a 0.5–0.6 mg/L triacontanol solution during the flowering stage enhances coloration, increases yield, and improves fruit quality (including sugar content).
DCPTA
Uniformly spraying the entire tree with a 20–30 mg/L DCPTA solution at the onset of flowering, after fruit set, and during the fruit expansion stage helps retain flowers and fruit, increases fruit set, ensures uniform fruit size, improves coloration and sweetness, and promotes early ripening and higher yields.
Forchlorfenuron (CPPU)
Targeted spraying of the fruit with a mixture of 5 mg/L forchlorfenuron and 25–50 mg/L gibberellic acid—applied 3–7 days and again 25–35 days after petal fall—increases fruit set and prevents physiological fruit drop.
6-BA
Spray the entire tree once with a 33.3–50 mg/L 6-BA solution at each of the following stages—onset of petal fall (prior to the first physiological fruit drop), the young fruit stage (prior to the second physiological fruit drop), and the pre-fruit-expansion stage—focusing the spray on the flowers and fruit. This promotes fruit set and increases yield; efficacy is further enhanced when used in combination with gibberellic acid. (Note: The sites and physiological mechanisms of citrus fruit drop vary across developmental stages; 6-BA is more effective than gibberellic acid at preventing the first early physiological fruit drop, whereas gibberellic acid offers a higher fruit retention rate than 6-BA for preventing the second physiological fruit drop.)
Gibberellic Acid (GA4+7) and Brassinolide
Spray the entire tree with 2.5–5 mg/L gibberellic acid (GA4+7) combined with 0.01–0.02 mg/L brassinosteroids during the early flowering or young fruit stage, focusing on the flowers and fruit; this strengthens the flowers and improves fruit retention.
