Citrus Defoliation Prevention & Biennial Bearing
Application of Regulators for Preventing Citrus Defoliation and Managing Alternate Bearing
6-BA
Spraying 33.3–50 mg/L 6-BA on mandarin trees during the late petal-fall stage in an "off-year" (low-yield year) can significantly improve fruit set and increase yield.
Gibberellic Acid (GA3)
Spraying 100 mg/L gibberellic acid during the flower bud differentiation period—November for sweet oranges or mid-January of the following year for Satsuma mandarins—can reduce the number of flower buds, thereby preventing excessive fruiting in the subsequent "on-year" (high-yield year).
Paclobutrazol
Spraying the canopy of Ponkan mandarin trees once with 1000 mg/L paclobutrazol between August and late September promotes bud differentiation; this increases the number of flowers for the following "off-year" and substantially boosts yield, thereby narrowing the gap between "on-year" and "off-year" production levels.
Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) / Ethephon-like thinning agents (Indole-related thinning agents)
For varieties such as Satsuma mandarin and "Bendizao," spraying the canopy with 100–200 mg/L of this agent 30–40 days after full bloom during an "on-year" can thin out smaller young fruits within the canopy, preventing excessive fruiting for the current season; the effect is essentially comparable to manual fruit thinning.
