Ethylene or Gibberellic Acid
Daffodils possess an innate dormancy characteristic. Ethylene helps break this dormancy. Under natural conditions, bulbs may experience endogenous dormancy before late July, which is difficult to break and requires prolonged exposure to low temperatures or treatment with an appropriate concentration of ethylene. After late July, the bulbs may enter environmental dormancy; short periods of low temperature, 50 mg/L gibberellic acid, or 50 mg/L ethylene can break this state.
Paclobutrazol
When daffodil bulbs divide, the uneven size of the small bulblets attached to the mother bulb can lead to inconsistent seedling growth. To address this, bulbs are typically soaked in a 20–50 mg/L paclobutrazol solution for 36–48 hours two days prior to planting in the ground in mid-to-late September. Once white roots approximately 0.5 cm long emerge from the basal plate, the bulbs are removed, soaked in clean water for 5–8 hours, and then planted. Treated daffodils exhibit high seedling survival rates and uniform emergence; the leaves become deep green and thick, the flowers grow large, and the flowering period is extended by 7–14 days.
