Lettuce Seed Dormancy Breaking & Germination

Gibberellic Acid
The optimal temperature for lettuce seed germination is 15–29°C; at temperatures above 25°C, germination capacity decreases significantly in the absence of light. Soil temperatures reaching 27°C typically induce dormancy in lettuce seeds. Soaking seeds in a 100 mg/L gibberellic acid solution for 30–60 minutes improves germination capacity under high-temperature conditions, achieving a germination rate of approximately 80%.
Kinetin
Soaking seeds in a 100 mg/L kinetin solution for 3 minutes overcomes dormancy caused by high temperatures. The effect of kinetin is particularly pronounced when the air temperature reaches 35°C.
Thiourea
Soaking seeds in a 0.5% thiourea solution for 30–60 minutes can also break dormancy and promote germination at high temperatures; experiments showed a germination rate of 75%, compared to only 7% for the control group. Combining 50 mg/L gibberellic acid with thiourea yields even better results.
