Strawberry Seedling Vigor & Runner Management
Application of Plant Growth Regulators for Cultivating Robust Strawberry Seedlings
Paclobutrazol
After the strawberry mother plants have successfully established following transplanting, apply a foliar spray of a 25–30 mg/L solution twice, with a 10-day interval between applications. Additionally, two months after transplanting, apply a 70–150 mg/L solution once. This treatment produces short, sturdy plants with shortened, thickened runners and an increased number of runners; it also thickens the crowns and increases the number of daughter plantlets, while helping to prevent anthracnose in later stages, thereby meeting the standard for "disease-free, robust seedlings."
Prohexadione-calcium
Spraying a 25–50 mg/L prohexadione-calcium solution twice—around the time of seedling establishment—controls excessive vegetative growth and promotes branching and rooting. This results in robust seedlings, increased flower counts, and higher fruit set rates.
Sodium nitrophenolate
Soak strawberry seeds in a 6 mg/L sodium nitrophenolate solution for 3–5 hours before sowing; air-dry them in the shade before planting to promote germination and root development. During the seedling-rearing stage, spray with a 6 mg/L sodium nitrophenolate solution every 5–7 days (for a total of 2–3 applications) to cultivate healthy, robust seedlings.
