What are the uses and properties of 1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene)?
1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) is a small-molecule cyclic olefin with the chemical formula C₄H₆ and a molecular weight of 54.09. At room temperature, it exists as a colorless gas; it is chemically reactive and readily binds to ethylene receptors. Its primary mechanism of action involves competitively occupying ethylene receptor sites within plant cells, thereby blocking ethylene signaling and inhibiting ethylene-induced physiological responses. This characteristic makes it a highly effective inhibitor of ethylene action, holding significant value for applications in agriculture and horticulture.
What are the main uses of 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP)?
1. Preservation of fruits and vegetables
Inhibition of ripening and senescence: By blocking the binding of ethylene to its receptors, 1-MCP delays the post-harvest ripening process of fruits and vegetables, preserving their firmness, color, flavor, and nutritional content. Examples include:
Apples: Reduces superficial scald and extends storage life to 8–9 months (compared to the traditional 3–5 months).
Kiwifruit: Maintains firmness, addresses the issue of short shelf life, and expands the transport radius.

Bananas, tomatoes, and strawberries: Inhibits respiration rates and ethylene release, reducing decay and weight loss.
Quality maintenance: Delays chlorophyll degradation, Vitamin C loss, and the decline of soluble solids, thereby preserving the commercial value of the produce.
2. Preservation of flowers
Extension of flowering period: 1-MCP inhibits ethylene-induced flower wilting, preserves petal color and fragrance, and extends the vase life of cut flowers.
Reduction of flower and fruit drop: In potted plants and ornamental flowers, it reduces bud, leaf, and flower drop, enhancing ornamental value.
3. Regulation of plant stress resistance
Disease resistance: By regulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and phenylpropanoid metabolism, it induces the accumulation of disease-fighting compounds—such as total phenols and flavonoids—in fruit, thereby mitigating disorders like superficial scald and black heart.
Cold resistance: Enhances crop tolerance to low-temperature conditions and reduces cold injury.
Drought resistance: In crops such as cotton, wheat, and sugarcane, it enhances leaf water retention, reduces cell membrane permeability, and improves drought tolerance.
4. Field crop management
Drought resistance and yield protection: Under drought conditions, it prevents ethylene-induced leaf curling and the decline of photosynthesis, maintaining normal growth.
Prevention of fruit drop: Application before harvest reduces ethylene-induced fruit abscission, thereby increasing yield.
Application characteristics of 1-Methylcyclopropene:
High efficiency and low toxicity: At effective concentrations (typically in the ppm range), 1-MCP is non-toxic to humans and animals and has been approved for use in food preservation in many countries. Flexible application: Can be applied via fumigation, soaking, or spraying; suitable for cold storage, transportation, and field management.
Environmentally friendly: Degradation products are harmless, aligning with the development needs of green agriculture.

How to use 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA)? What are the precautions?
Naphthaleneacetic acid (sodium) is a plant growth regulator belonging to the auxin class. In addition to the basic functions of general auxins, it can also promote the formation of adventitious roots and roots in plants, and is used to promote seed rooting, cutting rooting, and fibrous root growth in solanaceous crops.
