How to Use Sulfoxaflor + spinetoram for Resistant Thrips

Jun 26,2026

What is Sulfoxaflor + spinetoram?

Sulfoxaflor is a novel chemical insecticide belonging to the sulfoximine class; it acts on the insect nervous system and functions through both stomach toxicity and contact action.

Spinetoram exhibits excellent contact activity. It can be used to control diamondback moths and aphids on cabbage, aphids and thrips on watermelons, and aphids and thrips on ornamental roses.

Mode of action

The combination offers both excellent systemic and contact properties, enabling rapid pest knockdown alongside long-lasting control.

Application Instructions:

1. When applying in the field to control both cabbage aphids and diamondback moths, treatment should commence at the onset of peak infestation, specifically when the pests are in their early larval/nymphal stages; ensure uniform spray coverage on both the upper and lower surfaces of the cabbage leaves.

If pest population densities remain high, a second application may be made 7 days after the first, depending on field conditions.

When applying in the field to control both thrips and aphids on watermelons, treatment should commence at the onset of peak infestation; ensure uniform spray coverage on both the upper and lower surfaces of the watermelon leaves. Depending on the pest situation in the field, a second application may be made 7 days after the first.

When applying in the field to control aphids and thrips on ornamental roses, a single uniform spray application should be made at the early stage of infestation.

2. The pre-harvest interval (PHI) for this product on cabbage is 5 days, with a maximum of 2 applications per crop cycle.

3. The pre-harvest interval (PHI) for this product on watermelon is 7 days, with a maximum of 2 applications per crop cycle.

FAQ

Q. Why combine these two insecticides?

A. Sulfoxaflor possesses excellent systemic activity. Due to limited prior widespread use, thrips show low levels of resistance to it, and the agent significantly extends the duration of control.

Spinetoram offers excellent contact activity. Combining the two allows for rapid knockdown of pests while providing long-lasting control, making the mixture suitable for management during both the early onset and peak infestation stages of thrips.
Q. How often should I spray for thrips?
A. Apply a single, uniform spray at the early stage of aphid and thrips infestation. The pre-harvest interval (PHI) for use on cabbage is 5 days, with a maximum of two applications per crop cycle.
Q. How do I deal with migrating pests and concealed infestations?
A. Apply 500g of 30% clothianidin per acre (approx. 6.07 *mu*) via soil drenching to kill thrips hiding in the soil and ensure thorough eradication.
