2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) CAS 94-75-7

2,4-D is a phenoxyacetic acid-type plant growth regulator belonging to the auxin class. It exhibits high physiological activity; at low concentrations, it promotes rooting and increases fruit set rates, whereas at high concentrations, it can promote or inhibit the growth of specific organs and act as a herbicide.

Common English Name: 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)
CAS Number: 94-75-7
Molecular Formula: C8H6Cl2O3
Relative Molecular Mass: 221.04

Physicochemical Properties

The pure product consists of white crystals; it is odorless, non-hygroscopic, and has a melting point of 141°C. The technical-grade product appears as white or light brown crystals with a phenolic odor; it is soluble in acetone and ethanol, while its salts are water-soluble. It is stable at room temperature but decomposes upon exposure to ultraviolet light.

Toxicity: Moderate

Main Formulations: 0.2% 2,4-D sodium salt soluble powder; 85% 2,4-D sodium salt soluble powder; 2% 2,4-D sodium salt aqueous solution; 0.5% 2,4-D triethanolamine salt aqueous solution.

Functional Characteristics

2,4-D is a phenoxyacetic acid-type plant growth regulator belonging to the auxin class. It exhibits high physiological activity; at low concentrations, it stimulates plant growth, promotes rooting, induces cell differentiation, and increases fruit set. At high concentrations, it enters the plant through roots and leaves and degrades slowly, allowing it to accumulate to levels that disrupt hormonal balance, interfere with nucleic acid and protein metabolism, and promote or inhibit the growth of specific organs, thereby acting as a herbicide.

Precautions for Using 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid

① When preparing 2,4-D solutions, use glass, enamel, or ceramic containers; do not use metal containers. Thoroughly clean all containers and application equipment after use.
② Avoid excessive concentrations or dosages to prevent phytotoxicity and the formation of deformed fruit. Application rates may be adjusted according to the season: concentrations can be slightly higher during cold seasons and slightly lower during hot seasons, provided they remain within the recommended range. ③ When spraying 2,4-D, strictly prevent the solution from dripping onto tender stems or leaves to avoid phytotoxicity. If phytotoxicity occurs, mitigate the damage by applying plenty of water, administering an appropriate amount of quick-acting fertilizer, or removing the affected branches and leaves.
④ Strictly avoid treating the same flowers repeatedly. The best time for application is on a sunny morning or forenoon; avoid applying before rainy weather or in the evening.
⑤ Equipment used for decanting and spraying must be dedicated solely to this purpose and kept strictly away from acidic or alkaline substances; store in a cool, well-ventilated area, separate from seeds, food, and chemical fertilizers.
⑥ Toxic to bees; exercise caution during use.
