Physicochemical Properties
The technical-grade product is a pale yellow powder with a melting point of 207–209°C. It is insoluble in water, sparingly soluble in alcohols and aromatic hydrocarbons, and exhibits moderate solubility in acetonitrile and dimethylformamide. It is generally stable under acidic and alkaline conditions.
Main Formulations: 90% Phenylthiourea technical concentrate, 10% Phenylthiourea emulsifiable concentrate (EC)
Functional Characteristics
Phenylthiourea is an acylthiourea plant growth regulator containing a substituted furan ring. The oxygen atom in the furan ring can participate in hydrogen bonding within biological systems, enhancing molecular affinity between the compound and its receptors and thereby boosting biological activity. Phenylthiourea is primarily used to regulate rice growth; it enhances photosynthesis, promotes growth, and increases yield.
Application of Phenylthiourea on Rice:
Soaking seeds in a 100–200 mg/L solution for 48 hours prior to germination and sowing promotes vigorous root development and improves seedling quality and vigor. After transplanting to the field, it promotes rice tillering; in later stages, it increases the panicle formation rate and seed-setting rate, resulting in plump grains and increased yields.
Precautions
For late-season rice varieties, if the soaking duration is extended, the concentration may be adjusted (e.g., increased) or the soaking time shortened to ensure optimal efficacy. The ideal dosage should be determined through trials based on specific rice varieties and local cultivation practices.
